As an avid gardener I have learned that the most ideal and possibly the best garden soil has to have the right mixture of chemical components, physical components and biological matter to achieve optimum results.1. Chemically soil must contain adequate amounts of essential nutrient contents, (such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), be of suitable acid-alkaline reaction (pH levels), and free of substances toxic to plant growth, (such as herbicides).2. Physically soil should allow water to drain through and air to gain ready admittance, but not so loose that it does not retain enough moisture and nutrients for the plants’ needs, (in other words moist well drained soil).3. Biologically soil should contain an abundance of favorable organic matter (humus, which is what remains after extensive decomposition of organic matter), and other helpful soil organisms (such as earthworms) and a minimum of harmful ones, (such as nematodes). When the above three conditions are met, the gardener now has rich organic soil to successfully grow and harvest a variety of crops. Espoma Organic Potting Mix has all the above components; it is dark, rich with organic matter, moist, soft and light.I was able to successfully grow and reap a bountiful harvest of tomatoes, hot peppers (serrano and habanero), lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots and a wide variety of herbs and flowering plants. This is the best organic potting mix I've used and it gave optimum results. A+

I love this stuff! I buy it every year for my garden veggies. I grow my own veggies indoors and when it comes time to re-pot them, this is the stuff I use. I have always had good success with growth and stability of the individual veggie plant using this mix. I have also used it with indoor plants, having the same results. There is just something about this mix that works so much better than other store bought soil mixes. I have been solely using this product for about 4 years and I definitely recommend it.

Finally, I found an organic potting mix I can trust. I used this last week to re-pot a few houseplants, and what a difference! Plants look healthier already, and above all, NO PESTS! My biggest concern when looking for a good potting soil is the risk of fungus gnats (stay far away from Miracle Gro). I checked the soil thoroughly before using and was pleasantly surprised to see JUST soil - not a single creepy crawler in sight. Highly recommend!

Update 11•2019????????☹So very disappointed! Earlier this year i found tiny puncture holes made with a tiny object but when I opened the package all was fine. After I used what I needed I closed the bag rolling it tightly to keep air or fungus causing gnats/fruit flies [had that problem with another very popular brand. I cleaned the roots of my plant and replanted all of my plants in this brand because of the rich black soil and the micro organism in soil it was rich lightly fluffy no bugs for years .. as I said I bought a few packages earlier this year everything seemed fine except for the puncture spots. At the end of this autumn Ibegin to prepare my plants for a very very cold winter. And realized I'd have to start using another "boutique " soil i.e intact without bundled ruts and bug drying NY apt. Throwing away soil that seem to be littered with roots, branches, bugs fruit flies eggs I was so disappointed. Althought it is a worm casting soil I never ever spotted any worms--○••until I started working in it eww , litteredwith roots, 2 worms &.fruit flies coming up from the soil. Eww, happily i was work out of the disposal sink dump the soil down disposal and promised myself to NEVER ORDER this again. I kinda knew that the soil was having marketing troubles ; the usually expensive product was at a give away sale ½ off smh I've already found a replacement no I just cant do it! Pay for unprocessed? Weedy buggie soil? No, no, no. And I swore buy stuff!Case closed--'I only buy this brand for my apt garden ... I've grown summer veggies, I love my basil & other herb plants and I've even grown succulents!I'm also growing a lemon plant [3yrs] from seeds! I'm hoping it grows to be Ponderosa lemon tree-- evident in the tall trunks, full foilage that in another year maybe! --Update 9•2019 the fuller foilage of tree! Yay!--Since 2014 when I began this hobby I used another popular brand and my plants were FILLED with bugs I cleaned them up and NOW THIS IS THE ONLY BRAND FOR MY INDOOR GARDEN GROWN WITH LOVE & ESPOMA! See how my garden grows? Summer veggies Swiss Rainbow Chard, 3 brands of Kale, Broccoli and more ... from Start - to finish!

I am a first time gardener and I planted 5 variety of seeds and all 5 have sprung up in this mix. I also replanted a moneytree in this soil (it needed a bigger pot) and it's doing amazingly. It seems to be great multipurpose soil. I bought this mainly because I didn't want a huge bag from Home Depot. This size is perfect for a few small-medium sized houseplants or herbs. The bag is very nice with the zipper. I keep it in a cool and dry closet inside and have had no issues and it doesn't smell.

First, a heads-up: this is my first time trying anything related to gardening.I've used this potting mix with a plant that needed a bigger pot, and it seems to be happy and is growing and doing well.I've also used this potting mix with herb seeds. Zziggysgal 12 herbs, to be exact. On the individual seed packets it said 15-21, or 20-25 days to sprout, or thereabouts. Out of the first batch of six different herb seeds, the first ones sprouted in three days, and the rest sprouted within a week.My second batch I only planted three days ago, but already after two days one of them has sprouted.I have not been using any extra fertilizer. All I did was plant three or so seeds in each hole, water them with water in a baby bottle, make sure they're good and soaked for the first 24 to 48 hours (you're supposed to pre soak the seeds, but I soaked them in the soil instead). Then cover them with see-through plastic (I cut open a large zip lock bag). There was no sun involved, but around 70 F or so indoors.I don't know if I got really lucky on the seeds I got, or if this soil is just that good, but my other plant is doing great as well.It smells "earthy", and has little white balls in it, that's how it's supposed to be. It also has some small pieces of wood and thin twigs.I've only kept the herbs and my plant indoors for now (a couple of weeks), I have not seen any bugs or anything yet. I'll update the review if I do.
